Staff report

COLUMBUS

Legislation to institute criminal penalties for those assisting others in committing suicide passed the Ohio Senate on Thursday, 31-0.

If the Ohio House approves Senate amendments, HB 470 would await Gov. John Kasich’s signature. The larger legislation includes requirements for discharge planning between hospitals and patients’ caregivers, plus a process for making recommendations for memory care unit standards.

Those who assist suicide would face felony charges, with potential prison terms.
