Mahoning Valley receives state funding for park projects

COLUMBUS
The Controlling Board released grant funding for park improvement projects across the state, including five in the Mahoning Valley.
The grants announced Monday were included as part of the latest funding rounds through two state programs.
Nearly two dozen projects will receive a total of $10.5 million through the Clean Ohio Trails Fund, which is used to help groups improve and extend recreational trails.
Nearly $3 million in separate funding through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources NatureWorks grant program was approved for 89 local parks projects.
Area efforts receiving grants:
Mahoning County: Two projects were awarded NatureWorks grants in Mahoning County.
A $22,240 grant will go to the Beaver Township trustees for improvements, including an electric upgrade, flagpole renovations, landscaping and gutters, at Woodworth Park.
Another $21,825 will go to the city of Struthers to help “connect existing green space to other areas of interest in the city” as part of Northside Gateway green space improvements.
Trumbull County: A total of $43,360 will go toward the cost of a new pavilion at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.
Columbiana County: Two projects were awarded NatureWorks grants in Columbiana County.
A total of $16,000 will be used to pave a basketball court, replace backboards, repair lights and paint a fence at a Summitville park.
Another $9,539 will be used to improve accessibility and to make other playground improvements at the Harvey Firestone Park in Columbiana.
In other business, lawmakers released $50,000 to the Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services for the renovation of a 7,885-square-foot building in Lisbon.
The Family Recovery Center facility provides transitional housing for 19 women recovering from drug or alcohol addiction, according to documents.
