ALICE TRAINING At a glance

ALICE TRAINING At a glance

About 30 people attended a two-hour ALICE (alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate) session that an officer with the Youngstown State University Police Department conducted in YSU’s Kilcawley Center on Friday morning, on ways to more proactively handle and survive situations with an active shooter or violent intruder. A brief look at the five components:

Alert: When people first become aware of a potential threat and the need for a quick response.

Lockdown: Includes ways to effectively barricade a room as well as how and when to communicate with law-enforcement personnel and prepare to use other strategies.

Inform: The moments to disseminate information in real time and in clear and direct language when safe to do so.

Counter: Focuses on actions that create noise, distance, distractions and movements to reduce the shooter’s accuracy and keep the person off balance. Should be used as a last resort.

Evacuate: ALICE training sessions provide safe and strategic ways to safely get out of harm’s way.
