1954: The U.S. Senate passes, 67-22, a resolution condemning Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, R-Wis., saying he had “acted contrary to senatorial ethics and tended to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute.”

1961: Cuban leader Fidel Castro declares himself a Marxist-Leninist who would eventually lead Cuba to Communism.

1982: In the first operation of its kind, doctors at the University of Utah Medical Center implant a permanent artificial heart in the chest of retired dentist Dr. Barney Clark. (He would live 112 days with the device.)

2006: Fidel Castro fails to attend a military parade marking the 50th anniversary of the formation of Cuba’s Revolutionary Armed Forces, raising questions about his ability to return to power.

The two lawyers who successfully represented black Mahoning County residents in a federal- court challenge of the constitutionality of two Mahoning County Ohio House districts are seeking more than $600,000 in fees and costs. Robert Douglas and Percy Squires say it took 2,000 hours of work.

1976: An acetylene torch ignited some combustible insulation material in the partially rebuilt Penn-Ohio Truck Stop in North Lima, causing an estimated $200,000 in damage.

The Youngstown Area Urban League asks the Youngstown Board of Education to review its selection of security guards at city schools following complaints about overzealous behavior at Rayen and East high schools.

Brothers Carmen and Michael Pachell have 80 years between them working for the U.S. Steel Corp. When added to the years of their late father and three brothers who have retired, the Pachell family has a combined 211 years with the company.
