Lighting of the Village at the Poland library

Stop by the library as you’re taking part in the Lighting of the Village in Poland on Dec. 3. They will have Christmas crafts from 5:30-7 p.m. and songs and stories from 6:15-6:45 p.m. Kravitz Delicatessen will be open during the event for sandwich purchases and will be giving away hot cider and cookies while supplies last. Fun for the whole family.

Knitting Guild meeting to be Dec. 4

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will host a members and guest cookie exchange at the Canfield library large community room on Dec. 4 from 1-4 p.m. Members and guests are asked to bring four dozen or more cookies to exchange. You will leave the event with the same amount of cookies you bring, but in a different variety. Coffee and tea will be provided by the guild so if you wish, bring a few extra cookies to share with the event-goers while you stitch and chat. A program of knitted Christmas ornaments will be presented. Participants for the ornaments are asked to bring size three US straight needles or double pointed needles, scissors and a tapestry or darning needle. Yarn and embellishments for the ornaments will be provided. You do not have to participate in both events if you do not wish, just come for some friendly fellowship. The library is not sponsoring or participating in this event. Junior Women’s League Christmas social

The annual Christmas Social of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Steamers Restaurant, located at at 10078 Market St. in North Lima. Members are to bring unwrapped items for teen girls, ages 12-16 years-old, for the Christmas Operation Blessing. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Poland library every Thursday in December at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

MCCTC floral design open house

The Floral Design and Landscaping program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is having a holiday open house from Nov. 28 until Dec. 9. Come out to purchase all your holiday needs. Silk wreaths and table arrangements are available, as well as fresh wreaths with mixed holiday greens and fresh pine centerpieces (pre-made or special orders). Don’t forget about poinsettias. Stop in for both single and double poinsettias. The floral shop and greenhouse is open for business Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Give a week’s notice on any special order. Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Poland library on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. This event is for children ages 2-6.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library every Wednesday in December at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun time for 4s and 5s

Join the Poland library on Dec. 13 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes and finger plays, and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Decorate the felt holiday tree

Little ones can add felt decorations to the special holiday tree at the Poland library during library hours in December.

Elf on the bookshelf

During the month of December, visit the Poland library during library hours in December to see all the places and mischief the Elf on the Shelf is getting into. Look for the Elf on the Shelf photos on the Library’s Facebook page and Instagram and add some of your own. This program is for the family.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Gingerbread house holiday program

Sip hot chocolate and listen to Christmas music while you build and decorate a miniature gingerbread house using graham crackers, icing, gumdrops and more at the Poland library on Dec. 20 at 6:30 p.m. This event is for children of all ages; children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required, so stop in the Poland library or call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register.

Listen and Lego

Listen to a story and then have fun building with Legos at the Poland library on Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children ages 4-7.

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie at the Poland library on Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. Roxie is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland Library to register. This program is for grades first through fourth.

Trim a tree for December

Decorate an ornament for our all-seasons tree at the Poland library during library hours in December. This is for children of all ages.

Color your world

Join the Poland library on Dec. 7 from 7-8:30 p.m. for a relaxing evening of adult coloring. Coloring sheets and materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own. Colorful light refreshments will be served. This is for teens and adults.

Easy snowflake ornaments

Blood drive

Proudly serving the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital, the American Red Cross will be taking blood donations to help our community at the Poland library on Dec. 19 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. and Dec. 30 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Holiday library closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for the holidays on Dec. 24, 25, 26 and 31 as well as Jan. 1 and 2.

Wreaths of Remembrance

The old Poland Village Graveyard adjoining the Poland Presbyterian Church will again be the site of a Wreaths of Remembrance Ceremony on Dec. 3. The Poland Village Hine Fund Committee is sponsoring the event. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and will involve the placement of a pine wreath at the headstone of each of the veterans buried in the graveyard. There are 14 veterans of the Revolutionary War, 13 from the War of 1812 and 10 Civil War veterans buried in the graveyard. Veterans from the Poland American Legion Post and area Scouts will participate in the observance. The public is invited to attend.

Friends of the Poland librtary to meet on Dec. 6

The Friends of the Poland Library will meet on Dec. 6 at the Poland library. Coffee Hour will be at 9:30 a.m. with the program and business meeting to follow at 10 a.m. The program will be “Greystone (the Arms Museum), Through the Years” by Lea Mollman. Hostesses will be June Deeley, Mary Jane Pavelko and Ann Trefethern. Donations of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs are accepted at each meeting for the Poland Friends book cart. The meeting is open to the public. New members are welcome. Membership dues are $10 per year.

Celebrate Short Fiction Day

Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. Carlozzi annual funds drive

Carlozzi Financial Services is again helping local families in need this holiday season. The public is invited to join Carlozzi Financial Services and their clients to give a monetary donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. Monetary donations can be mailed to Carlozzi Financial Services, 831 Southwestern Run, Suite 1, Poland. For information, visit www.CarlozziFinancialServices.com. Second Harvest Food Bank distributed 10.4 million pounds of food in 2015 in the tri-county area. Last year, Carlozzi Financial Services collected $1,225 in monetary donations. Mark Carlozzi is hoping that this year will be even greater.

Boardman Park Christmas events

Create a new family tradition by gathering your family and friends and coming out to Boardman’s Community Christmas on Dec. 4 from 4-6 p.m., to decorate your own family named tree, see Santa and enjoy Holiday music. Beginning at 4 p.m., bring some natural decorations and decorate one of the park’s pine trees. Santa will be arriving by fire truck at 4:20 p.m. Be sure to bring your camera and take a picture with Santa in the gazebo. Then, head up to The St. James Meeting House and enjoy some cookies and hot chocolate while listening to Christmas music and caroling led by Tom Ruggieri and Linda Smrek and The Boardman High School Band beginning at 4:30 p.m. The lighting of the Community Christmas Tree will take place at 4:45 p.m. All activities are free and will take place near the gazebo and St. James Church. They will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Boardman Lions Club Food Pantry at Boardman Center Intermediate School.

Blue Christmas service

The holidays are generally a joyous time, but the loss of a loved one, a beloved pet or a life-changing situation can make them shine less bright. Harbor Light Hospice, Shepherd of the Valley and Lane Funeral Home invite you to their Blue Christmas, a service to offer support, healing and encouragement during the holidays on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m., with registration and refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. They will be reflecting and remembering that which has lessened the glow this time of year. GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Yoga class

Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in the Poland library meeting room from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session.

Book-A-Librarian

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
