Christmas cookie walk

Cookies will be sold by the dozen for $5.50 per dozen on Dec. 10 at 9-11 a.m. or until they are sold out at Bethel Lutheran Church at 425 Crestview in Boardman. The Bethel “Piecemakers” will have hand sewn items for sale.

Knitting Guild meeting to be Dec. 4

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will host a members and guest cookie exchange at the Canfield library large community room on Dec. 4 from 1-4 p.m. Members and guests are asked to bring four dozen or more cookies to exchange. You will leave the event with the same amount of cookies you bring, but in a different variety. Coffee and tea will be provided by the guild so if you wish, bring a few extra cookies to share with the event-goers while you stitch and chat. A program of knitted Christmas ornaments will be presented. Participants for the ornaments are asked to bring size three US straight needles or double pointed needles, scissors and a tapestry or darning needle. Yarn and embellishments for the ornaments will be provided. You do not have to participate in both events if you do not wish, just come for some friendly fellowship. The library is not sponsoring or participating in this event. MCCTC floral open house

The Floral Design and Landscaping program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is having a holiday open house from Nov. 28 until Dec. 9. Come out to purchase all your holiday needs. Silk wreaths and table arrangements are available, as well as fresh wreaths with mixed holiday greens and fresh pine centerpieces (pre-made or special orders). Don’t forget about poinsettias. Stop in for both single and double poinsettias. The floral shop and greenhouse is open for business Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Give a week’s notice on any special order. Junior Women’s League Christmas social

The annual Christmas Social of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Steamers Restaurant, located at at 10078 Market St. in North Lima. Members are to bring unwrapped items for teen girls, ages 12-16 years-old, for the Christmas Operation Blessing. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in December at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Boardman library every Wednesday in December at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

A candy carnival celebration

School’s out...come to the Boardman library to celebrate by making candy crafts and playing Candyland and other carnival games on Dec. 28 at 10 a.m. Candy prizes will be provided at this one-hour family program that is open to children of all ages. Preschoolers must attend with an adult.

Elf on the bookshelf

During the month of December, visit the Boardman library during library hours in December to see all the places and mischief the Elf on the Shelf is getting into. Look for the Elf on the Shelf photos on the Library’s Facebook page and Instagram and add some of your own. This program is for the family.

I’m no dummy, it’s me, Mr. Puppet

Come watch Bob Abdou perform a ventriloquist skit with his sidekick, Mr. Puppet, at the Boardman library on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. A holiday skit that is sure to please the family, and a snack will be provided.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Night owl

There will be an evening story time for children ages 3-5 at the Boardman library on Dec. 6, 20 and 27 at 6:30 p.m. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30 minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity.

Trim a tree for December

Decorate an ornament for our all-seasons tree at the Boardman library during library hours in December. This is for children of all ages.

Make a snowflake

Create a snowflake out of chainmail that could be used as a piece of jewelry or as an ornament at the Boardman library on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. Sit around and discuss favorite winter memories over snacks and refreshments while showing off what you made. This is for teens in grades 7-12.

TAB meeting Boardman

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting at the Boardman library on Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m. They meet the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. Help plan and support teen activities at the library. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome. This is for teens in grades 7-12.

Check into chess

Join the Boardman library as they play chess on Dec. 4 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. This is a family program for all ages. If you would like to learn to play, they’ll be happy to teach you.

It’s all about yarn

Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another at the Boardman library on Dec. 9 at 11 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects). This program is for adults.

I Read YA! book club

This event is for adult fans of Young Adult Literature from ages 18-118, this book club is for you. Talk about why you like YA, read and discuss at the Boardman library on Dec. 19 at 6:30 p.m. This month they will be discussing “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie.

Reader’s Choice book club

You will discuss “The Husband’s Secret,” by Liane Moriarty. Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published at the Boardman library on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. They will preview January’s book, “The Grapes of Wrath,” by John Steinbeck.

Blood pressure screening

There will be a Red Cross blood pressure screening at the Boardman library on Dec. 5 from 12:30–2:30 p.m.

Blood drive

Proudly serving the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital, the American Red Cross will be taking blood donations to help our community at the Boardman library on Dec. 27 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Recording your personal history

Join the Boardman library on Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m. for the third and last workshop for creating a personal recollections memoir to pass on to your family’s future generations. If this is your first workshop, they will get you started and on your way to recording your personal history. For those who attended the previous workshops, they will help you wrap up your project. Puzzle swap

Swap six of your once-done jigsaw puzzles with others on the second Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. This month will be on Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. For more information, call the development office at 330-740-6086.

Holiday library closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for the holidays on Dec. 24, 25, 26 and 31 as well as Jan. 1 and 2.

Operation Warm Feet

The Boardman Community Foundation announces its annual “Operation Warm Feet” campaign to gather donated children’s boots, to be distributed in the Boardman community. The Foundation requests donations of new or once worn children’s boots – all sizes and colors accepted. The campaign runs from Dec. 3-31. The campaign kickoff event will be on Dec. 3 from 12-2 p.m. at the Boardman library branch, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman. Additional “Operation Warm Feet” drop-off sites during December will be at Shepherd Self Storage, located at 7469 South Ave. in Boardman, or Boardman Township Park Office Building, located at 375 Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman.

Celebrate Short Fiction Day

Space is still available for area fiction writers who want to be part of the upcoming “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day. The annual literary event is scheduled for Dec. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at Courtyard Square, located at 645 E. State Street in Salem. The public event, now in its third year, provides local writers with the opportunity to share their work with area fans, participants and other authors able to sell their own books during the event. A limited number of spaces at $10 each are available for those authors who aren’t reading but would like to make their books available for sale. Sellers must bring their own tables — no larger than 6 feet. Space reservations are required and must be paid in advance. Carlozzi annual funds drive

Carlozzi Financial Services is again helping local families in need this holiday season. The public is invited to join Carlozzi Financial Services and their clients to give a monetary donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. Monetary donations can be mailed to Carlozzi Financial Services, 831 Southwestern Run, Suite 1, Poland. For information, visit www.CarlozziFinancialServices.com. Second Harvest Food Bank distributed 10.4 million pounds of food in 2015 in the tri-county area. Last year, Carlozzi Financial Services collected $1,225 in monetary donations. Mark Carlozzi is hoping that this year will be even greater.

Boardman Park Christmas events

Create a new family tradition by gathering your family and friends and coming out to Boardman’s Community Christmas on Dec. 4 from 4-6 p.m., to decorate your own family named tree, see Santa and enjoy Holiday music. Beginning at 4 p.m., bring some natural decorations and decorate one of the park’s pine trees. Reserve your tree by calling the park office at 330-726-8105, or e-mailing Angela at angela@boardmanpark.com. Santa will be arriving by fire truck at 4:20 p.m. Be sure to bring your camera and take a picture with Santa in the gazebo. Then, head up to The St. James Meeting House and enjoy some cookies and hot chocolate while listening to Christmas music and caroling led by Tom Ruggieri and Linda Smrek and The Boardman High School Band beginning at 4:30 p.m. The lighting of the Community Christmas Tree will take place at 4:45 p.m. All activities are free and will take place near the gazebo and St. James Church. They will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Boardman Lions Club Food Pantry at Boardman Center Intermediate School.

GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
