The YMCA is a household name recognized by most generations of Americans for the organization’s dedication to strengthening local communities.
Doug Sweeney, owner and president of Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC Truck Company in Boardman, is delighted to have his name associated with the organization’s Boardman Y.
“The Y has such a great name, and the fact that our name can be with the Y is really great,” Sweeney said.
The themes Wednesday morning were “generosity and gratitude” in the lobby of the D.D. & Velma Davis Family YMCA, where the Y unveiled its new “Sweeney Way” sign to the Sweeney Auto Group of Boardman.
The crowd consisted of administrators from the YMCA of Youngstown and the Sweeney Auto Group as well as preschoolers from the Davis YMCA Preschool program. The sign will accompany the dedication of the new stretch of road leading from the main YMCA building to the Davis Outdoor Recreation Area.
The dedication honors the auto group’s latest donation to complete the funding needed to build the road that now bears the Sweeney name.
Beth Scheller, chief operating officer of the YMCA of Youngstown, said the Sweeney family has a long history of helping YMCA’s mission of strengthening the foundations for community through youth development, heathy living and responsibility.
Sweeney said he was honored to receive the dedication.
“The Y has a long, continuous history of making families stronger and making kids better because of their involvement in the Y, and so we feel like that’s a cause that we needed to help,” he said. “It was an easy decision to help. We just needed to decide what to do.”
