CANFIELD FAIR | Teens participate in virtual texting-and-driving demo

CANFIELD — A group of teenage girls, clearly on a break from today's cheerleading demonstrations at the grandstand, eagerly clustered around.

Andrew Turner, who works for the Mahoning County Sheriff Office's technology services unit, was leading them in a virtual texting-and-driving demonstration.

Users hold a remote control meant to simulate a phone, and wear a virtual-reality headset while trying to make it around three laps on a virtual track.

"It's mostly to show how difficult it is," Turner said. "As you can see from our leader board – you're supposed to go three laps – the most we've had is 1.5 laps."

The sheriff's office has an office set up at the grandstand for the six days of the fair.
