6th hottest August

YOUNGSTOWN

Though it only got into the 90s twice last month, it was still the sixth-warmest August for the Mahoning Valley on record.

“It was a month characterized by a consistent warmth,” said Eric Wilhelm, chief meteorologist for 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner. “We had numerous days with highs in the upper 80s.”

The warmest day was Aug. 12 at 91 degrees followed a day later with a high of 90 degrees. Fifteen other days had a high of at least 85 degrees.

Last month’s average temperature of 74.1 degrees was the sixth warmest for an August in the Valley, according to the National Weather Service, which has local weather data going back to 1897.

That is 5 degrees warmer than an average August in the Valley.

The warmest August on record is 1947.
