YoChautauqua2016 event is Thursday in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley Lifelong Learning Institute will host YoChautauqua2016 on Thursday.

Modeled on the adult education movement of the 19th and early 20th century, YoChatauqua2016 is the first of its kind for the area.

It will be an in-depth day of education and entertainment focused solely on life in the 1800s. In collaboration with its partner the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, the MVLLI event will feature music, speakers, performers and a special, off-site tour of a historical home.

The schedule for the day is:

• Life in the Western Reserve from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. This presentation will explore the lives of the settlers of the Mahoning Valley from 1796 to 1830 using historical information and stories.

• Arms Family Museum Tour, 648 Wick Ave., from 4 to 5 p.m. This guided tour of the arts-and-crafts style home of Olive A. and Wilford P. Arms will provide an understanding of life in the Mahoning Valley for different people at different times.

• Abraham Lincoln’s Life as president from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Gerald A. Payn, a presenter and historian, will bring Abraham Lincoln to life portraying events from first presidential campaign to that fateful night at Ford’s Theater.

• Classical Music of the 1800s from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Harmony String Quartet will sample classical selections of the 1800s.

All events, except for the tour of the Arms Family Museum, will take place at the Gelhaar Center, 1216 Fifth Ave.
