Two to be arraigned on OVI charges

BOARDMAN

A township man and Warren woman will be arraigned this morning in Mahoning County Area Court, both facing charges of operating a vehicle while impaired after their arrest Saturday morning.

Police arrested Jonathan Wetzel, 25, of Larkridge Avenue, at 1 a.m. on Boardman-Poland Road. Wetzel reportedly registered a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.183 percent, more than twice the state legal intoxication limit of 0.08 percent.

Police also arrested Elizabeth DeMarco, 40, of Forest Glen Road, at 1:30 a.m. on Youngstown-Poland Road. Police said DeMarco registered a BAC of 0.157 percent.

More OVI arrests

Officers made two arrests for drivers suspected of operating a vehicle impaired over the weekend in Boardman and Austintown.

The arrests were the result of two sobriety checkpoints conducted by Mahoning County OVI Task Force and Ohio State Highway Patrol officers.

Nine hundred thirty-one vehicles passed through checkpoints with 10 vehicles directed into the diversion area for further investigation. Officers conducted 46 traffic stops.

Officers issued eight summonses for these offenses: driving with a suspended license, drug abuse, drug paraphernalia and underage drinking. In addition, there were 10 citations for these offenses: speeding, not wearing a seat belt, not having a license-plate light, marked-lanes violation and failure to stop at a stop sign and a red light.

Land bank honored

The Mahoning County Land Bank has received the Auditor of State award for its exemplary financial audit, which contains no findings for recovery, material citations or weaknesses, significant deficiencies or questioned costs. The land bank’s mission is to return vacant, tax-delinquent land to productive use.

Cookout planned

Dorothy Day House, 620 Belmont Ave., plans a cookout with guests from law enforcement and city government at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Sister Ann McManamon, director, said participants will be Mayor John A. McNally, Police Chief Robin Lees and community police officer Shakir Perkins, Sheriff Jerry Greene and Councilman Nate Pinkard, D-3rd. The Dorothy Day House is located on the North Side in the 3rd Ward.

Brookfield trustees

The Brookfield Township trustees will have a special meeting and adjourn into an executive session regarding personnel matters for road and police departments at 7:30 p.m. today at the township building on Strimbu Drive.

Hangar expansion

NEW CASTLE. PA.

The New Castle Municipal Airport is receiving $250,000 in state funds to complete expansion of its hangar and enhance security, Gov. Tom Wolf’s office recently announced.

The project will include installing new fencing, gates, cameras and camera equipment.

In Mercer County, Greenville Municipal Airport will get $10,800 to prepare airport hazard zoning ordinances that municipalities can enact.

STEM session done

YOUNGSTOWN

Children completed the Oak Hill Collaborative’s third session in a STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – education series last week.

The collaborative program helps educate students between age 10 and 15 through hands-training in building and programming a Raspberry Pi microcomputer. Many come from low- to moderate-income households.

The program is designed to help bridge the digital divide by serving children who may have limited access to the internet and other key technologies by teaching them skills and providing internet access through Raspberry Pi devices they build and program themselves, according to a collaborative news release.

Suspect remains jailed

NILES

Clair D. Enlow, 53, of Battles Avenue, Niles, remains in the North-Central Regional Jail in Greenwood, W.Va., after his arrest Sunday on a warrant from Niles charging him with shooting his female companion earlier Sunday.

A jail official said Enlow’s court case is being handled through the Marion County Magistrate Court in Fairmount, W.Va.

Niles officials said Enlow was picked up on Interstate 79 about 5 p.m. Sunday. The woman was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where she underwent surgery, police said. Her name was not released.
