Firefighters to be promoted today

Two firefighters are being promoted in a ceremony at the city’s main fire station, 420 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., at 8:30 a.m. today. Chad Manchester is being promoted from lieutenant to captain, and Matt Davies is being promoted from firefighter to lieutenant.

Mayor John A. McNally will swear both firefighters into their new duties.

Two file to run as write-in candidates

Calvin Hill Sr. of Lilburne Drive, who received 27 votes as a Youngstown mayoral write-in candidate in 2009, filed as a write-in candidate for the 13th Congressional District in the Nov. 8 general election.

Also, Pastor Todd Johnson of Second Baptist Church on Main Avenue Southwest in Warren filed paperwork to run as a Trumbull County commissioner candidate. He’s a customer-service representative at the Trumbull County Department of Job and Family Services and a member of the Warren Civil Service Commission. No one else in the Mahoning Valley filed by Monday’s deadline.

Road closed today for work on bridge

YOUNGSTOWN

Between 7 p.m. today and 5 a.m. Wednesday, U.S. Route 62 between South and Himrod avenues will be closed for a concrete bridge deck pour. A detour will be posted, the Ohio Department of Transportation has announced.

Two ramps will remain closed for bridge repairs through late September: the ramp from South Avenue to Route 62 eastbound; and the ramp from Route 62 eastbound to Himrod Avenue.

This work is part of a $17 million project to make repairs to the Route 62 bridge over the Mahoning River, Poland Avenue, Cedar Street and the railroad. The project is scheduled to be completed by November.

Donations to be presented at offices

The AT&T Pioneers, Youngstown Chapter, a group of community service-oriented company employees and retirees, and State Rep. John Boccieri of Poland, D-59th, will present 100 donated suitcases containing blankets and toiletries to Mahoning County Children Services at 10 a.m. today in the child welfare agency’s offices, 222 W. Federal St.

The suitcases will be superior to the plastic bags or trash bags often used to contain belongings of abused or neglected children entering foster care on short notice, said Jennifer T. Kollar, children services public-information officer.

Suspect in Liberty robbery arrested

The U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force on Monday arrested a man suspected of robbing a Liberty business at knife-point. Police say Timothy Clinkscale, 56, brandished a knife last Wednesday and took cash from the register at Dollar General on Logan Way.

Clinkscale was apprehended while hiding in the attic of a North Side Youngstown home, according to the Liberty Police Department. Officers booked Clinkscale into the Trumbull County Jail on a felony aggravated-robbery charge.
