v Jazz in the Park, 3 to 7:30 p.m.: Akron vocal group Starlight, Youngstown’s Total Package Band and more will take the stage outdoors at B&O Station, 530 Mahoning Ave. Attendees are asked to bring new toys and school supplies for the Boys and Girls clubs. The event will include a barbecue sauce contest (contestants must bring own meat and equipment).

MTV Video Music Awards (9 p.m., MTV): Adele, Drake, Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Britney Spears are all expected to be in the house for this year’s ceremony, which is taking place at Madison Square Garden for the first time. But unless Kanye does something ridiculous again, the night’s real star figures to be Beyonce. Queen Bey leads everyone with 11 nominations, including video of the year for her bold and visually striking “Formation.”

“The Night Of” (9 p.m., HBO): The summer’s most compelling drama series, “The Night Of,” concludes tonight. So did Naz (Riz Ahmed) really kill Andrea? And if he didn’t, who did?

“The Strain” (10 p.m., FX): Ready to get creeped out by “The Strain” again? Season 3 picks up two weeks after the events of last season’s finale. War has broken out between the citizens of New York City and sinister vampires known as the strigoi.

Badfish returns to Nelson Ledges

Lane Cooper art at campus gallery

“It’s a Wonderful Life,” an exhibit of paintings by Lane Cooper, will open Sept. 6 at Link Gallery at Kent State University-Trumbull campus, and run through Oct. 6. An opening reception will be Sept. 7 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Cooper is a professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Her paintings explore the ways in which fragments from our perceptual experiences and memories are pieced together to form meaning, which — in the artist’s view — is always shifting, filled with extraneous noise, and, because they are fundamentally fragmentary, always just out of grasp.
