A 3-year-old girl died in Springfield Township after getting out of the house and to the family’s above-ground swimming pool.

Emergency crews were called to the East South Range Road home around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, Springfield Township police said the drowning appears to be accidental.

The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office will be investigating.

Pedestrian killed

NESHANNOCK

Police are investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian just before midnight Friday night.

New Castle resident Bruce G. Willis, 35, was found unresponsive by emergency personnel and police after he was hit at 11:44 p.m. on state Route 18.

According to a police report, the driver of the vehicle said he was traveling south on Route 18 when something struck his windshield, smashing it inward. When he turned around, he found Willis on the road and had a passing motorist call 911.

The southbound lane was closed for about three hours.

Toth garden tour

Rodney and Kay Toth will offer a 20th annual tour of their gardens from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. next Sunday at their home, 5637 W. Liberty St.

On display in the gardens are special dahlias and unique varieties of tomatoes, peppers, hosta, coleus, annuals and perennials. It also features a Great Gourd Tunnel, a 40 foot long gourd arbor, a Grandchildren’s Garden with an arrangement of beans, lily, cabbage and carrots, and special bean, marigold and squash gardens. Monica Toth Baker will provide music at 2 p.m. Also featured will be John Schinker from the Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown with a display of mums and Alice Lang with decorative gourd art.

Incubator to open

WARREN

The Flats Business Incubator Center is on schedule to open this fall in the former Union Auto Parts store on South Main Avenue next to the Warren Flea and Farmer’s Market. Both businesses are owned by Brad Levy and his family. The privately funded incubator is open to a wide variety of business entrepreneurs, small businesses and start-up businesses with creative product ideas or services, Levy said in a news release.

Applications for space in the incubator will be available at the main office of the flea market beginning Thursday during the market’s normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, send an email to fii@cisnet.com. Include name and phone number.

Firefighters grant

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has awarded Braceville Fire Department an $86,096 grant, U.S. Rep Tim Ryan of Howland, D-13th announced in a news release.
