1928: The Kellogg-Briand Pact is signed in Paris, outlawing war and providing for the peaceful settlement of disputes.

1949: A violent white mob prevents an outdoor concert headlined by Paul Robeson from taking place near Peekskill, N.Y. (The concert took place eight days later.)

1975: Haile Selassie, the last emperor of Ethiopia’s 3,000-year-old monarchy, dies in Addis Ababa at age 83, almost a year after being overthrown.

2006: A Comair CRJ-100 crashes after trying to take off from the wrong runway in Lexington, Ky., killing 49 people and leaving the co-pilot the sole survivor.

2008: Barack Obama is nominated for president by the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

1991: John Moliterno, president of the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce, says a committee of 20 business and community leaders is looking for ways to ease the financial pressure of operating the Youngstown Municipal Airport that is being carried by the city of Youngstown.

The 1989 Mustang being driven by racketeer Joey Naples when he was murdered at his Beaver Township home is returned to its owner, Frank M. Dileo of Ojai, Calif. Dileo said he and Naples were longtime friends.

1976: Lamson and Sessions Co. of Cleveland will try to buy control of the Youngstown Steel Door Co. in a move apparently aimed at heading off a takeover of Steel Door by Thrall Car Manufacturing Co. of Chicago.

The Youngstown Municipal Airport will have a new wing and a sleek look under a $1.8 million remodeling plan. If federal funding is approved, the city will have to pay $82,000 of the cost.

Six Youngstown-area children leave for a week of outdoor living at Camp NEOSA, the Salvation Army’s camp in Carrollton. The campers are Ronnie Valentin, Anthony Smith, Mark Pratt, Sonya Pratt, Lisa Pratt and Lester Walker.

1966: A 21-year-old Geneva, Ohio, college student flying with his 13-year-old sister calmly lands his disabled Beech Bonanza on a foam-covered runway at Youngstown Municipal Airport, ending four hours of staying aloft to deplete fuel.

The Mahoning Presbytery of the United Presbyterian Church will open a new chapel in the McGuffey area to be known as McGuffey Memorial Chapel.

Assistant City Prosecutor Edward Sobnosky challenges Municipal Court Judge John J. Leskovyansky’s contention that the judge has the authority to treat a charge of possessing abortion tools as a misdemeanor. Atty. Don Hanni Jr. enters a guilty plea for Mario Guarrieri but asks that the charge be treated as a misdemeanor.

1941: Youngstown and Ravenna have been designated as centers for defense recreational projects under a joint federal security-work project program under the Works Progress Administration.

At least two of the Youngstown district’s four major steel producers will operate steel-producing units over Labor Day because of an urgent national defense need for steel, with men being paid time and a half.

Seeking to aid Youngstown district steel plants to bolster dwindling supplies of iron and steel scrap, representatives of Mahoning County Communities, civic groups and steel companies will meet to plan a “Scrap of Defense” campaign.
