Lecture topic: Civil War letters

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

Carleton Young will return to Westminster College on Sept. 19 to give a presentation on the 250 Civil War letters he discovered in the attic of his childhood home.

Young is a 1973 graduate of Westminster. His presentation will start at 5:30 p.m. in Patterson Hall Room 207, and will focus on his book “Voices from the Attic: The Williamstown Boys in the Civil War.” The event is free and open to the public.

The book compiles the letters written by two brothers, Francis and William “Henry” Martin, to their parents in Vermont.

“Those letters tell stories that help to personalize a pivotal point in American history,” said Dr. Angela Lahr, assistant professor of history at Westminster. For information, contact Lahr at lahram@westminster.edu.

Springsteen plays record-setting show

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed a 35-song set for 3 hours and 52 minutes Tuesday at MetLife Stadium.

A Springsteen fan website, Backstreets.com, says that was Springsteen’s longest U.S. show.

The Boss’ longest show was 4 hours and 6 minutes in Helsinki, Finland, in 2012.

Springsteen also played a second show at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night.

The band’s current U.S. tour also includes a Sept. 11 show at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.
