Calica’s big night leads Scrappers to win

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers rode the hot hitting Andrew Calica to a 5-1 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones at MCU Park. Calica reached base in all five at bats, driving in two runs and scoring three more as the Scrappers secured the series win.

The Scrappers first run came in the top of third inning when Gavin Collins drew a bases loaded walk to score Calica who had reached with two outs on a hit by pitch. Calica now leads the New York Penn League with 14 hit by pitches.

After Brooklyn tied the game in the bottom of the third, Calica would again deliver in the fourth inning. Jake Goihl started the inning with a leadoff triple to centerfield. Goihl would score the eventual winning run on a passed ball with two outs. Then with Jorma Rodriguez on base, Calica connected on a two run home run off the top of the foul pole in right field for a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning Calica would strike again. With two outs, Calica tripled to centerfield to extend the inning. After an Erlin Cerda walk, Calica would score the final run of the game on an Emmanuel Tapia RBI single, one of four hits for Tapia.

The Scrappers (32-32) now return to Eastwood Field to host the West Virginia Black Bears (31-34) for a three game series starting tonight at 7:05. Tanner Tully will get the start for the Scrappers.

Mill Creek director, pro win awards

Northern Ohio PGA announced the nominations of Mill Creek Park Golf Director, Brian Tolnar and Golf Pro, Andy Santor earlier this month. Brian has been nominated for three awards: 2016 Northern Ohio PGA Golf Professional of the Year, Bill Strausbaugh Award, and Merchandiser of the Year - Public. Andy has been nominated for two awards: 2016 Northern Ohio PGA Teacher of the Year and Youth Player Development Award.

The awards Santor has been nominated bestow special recognition on a PGA Golf Professional who has performed outstanding services as a golf teacher and coach and has displayed an extraordinary contribution and achievement in the area of youth player development.

“I am so privileged to work with the youth in the valley as well as adults to give them a better understanding for the game of golf”, Santor said. “It is very humbling to be nominated for these awards and to know I am making a difference in today’s youth and the future of golf.”

Montgomery named defensive POW

For the second time in her career, senior goalkeeper Katie Montgomery has been named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

The Mariposa, Calif., native recorded six saves and registered her first shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Robert Morris on Aug. 19. The win marks the seventh of her career and her fifth career shutout, which ranks tied for third all-time.

She also became the 11th YSU goalkeeper to record at least 100 saves and now has 104. She needs five more to move into 10th place on the career saves list.

Brazil charges Lochte over Olympic incident

Brazilian police charged American swimmer Ryan Lochte on Thursday with filing a false robbery report over an incident during the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

A police statement said Lochte would be informed in the United States so he could decide whether to introduce a defense in Brazil. The indictment will also be sent to the International Olympic Committee’s ethics commission, it said.

It said the case was turned over to a special Brazilian court that has jurisdiction over crimes related to major sporting events. The court, which was established before Brazil hosted soccer’s 2014 World Cup, is authorized to receive cases straight from the police when lesser charges are involved, without a need for prosecutors.

The swimmer’s spokeswoman, Melissa Nathan, said Lochte had no comment.
