In an effort to raise awareness and funds for alopecia areata, a Quarter Auction will take place at St. Charles Parish Hall in Boardman on Sept. 18. All proceeds from the Quarter Auction will be donated to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.

“The goal of this Quarter Auction is to raise awareness and funds for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. September is National Alopecia Areata Awareness Month, so we thought this was the perfect time to hold the event,” said Nancy Mikos, event organizer.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease resulting in the loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. Alopecia areata patches usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth bald patches on the scalp or elsewhere. Total scalp hair loss is alopecia areata totalis. Complete body hair loss is alopecia areata universalis. Alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis are considered rare diseases.

Alopecia areata affects approximately 2 percent of the population overall, including more than 6.5 million people in the U.S. and 145 million people worldwide.

Currently, there is no cure for alopecia areata. The National Alopecia Areata Foundation has launched a seven-year first phase Alopecia Treatment Development Program to find an acceptable treatment. Treatment options are limited at this time and depend upon the extent of hair loss. No one treatment works well for every person.

During the Quarter Auction, various items will be available to bid on. Based on the value of the item, guests will bid quarters. For example, bidders could win a $25 item for a two quarter bid. Item values are determined by vendors and announced for each item. A one quarter bid is required for items valued at $1 to $19.99; a two quarter bid is required for items valued at $20 to $39.99; a three quarter bid is required for items valued at $40 to $59.99 and a four quarter bid is required for items valued at $60 and up.

Tickets must be purchased in advance for the event, as seating is limited. Admission is $5 and tickets may be purchased by calling Jen Kreps at 330-550-2180 or Dina DiVincenzo at 330-718-0994. The admission fee includes entrance into all door prize drawings and one bidding paddle.

Reserved tables are available for eight or more guests only.

St. Charles Parish Hall is located at 7345 Westview Drive in Boardman. Doors open at 4:15 p.m., with the auction to start at 5 p.m.
