The Boardman library hosted a Cross the Finish Line event for children to create and race cars on Aug. 11.
John Yingling and Karen Saunders, Boardman library youth librarians, created an event for children to attend where they could listen to stories about cars and then create their own cars from clothespins and other household materials. If any children who attended had their own car they created for a Pinewood Derby or any other event, they were more than welcome to bring those.
Saunders read the children a few books to get the children in the theme of cars. When the stories were finished, Saunders and Yingling told the children they had the opportunity to make their own cars out of the materials provided and race the cars down a ramp the librarians made. There were also Lego cars the children could race their cars against. Saunders and Yingling demonstrated how the cars would go down the ramp and had the children guess which car would win.
“The Lego cars were created by other children who attended our Lego program once a month here,” said Saunders.
The children headed over to the tables to create their own cars to race. Children used clothespins, Styrofoam, push pins and other materials to create and decorate a car to race. There was enough material for each child to create two of their own cars.
When the children finished making their cars, they would race them down the ramps against the other cars. The children with cars that came in first place got a small trophy for winning. Each child ended up going home with a first place trophy.
