Solo suspended from U.S. women’s team

chicago

U.S. women’s goalkeeper Hope Solo was suspended Wednesday for six months by U.S. Soccer for disparaging comments about Sweden following the Americans’ early departure from the Rio Olympics.

Solo called the Swedes “a bunch of cowards” for focusing on defense rather than attacking the three-time defending champion U.S. team. Sweden ousted the U.S. 4-3 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw in a quarterfinal match.

U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said Solo’s comments were “unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our National Team players.”

“Beyond the athletic arena, and beyond the results, the Olympics celebrate and represent the ideals of fair play and respect,” Gulati said. “We expect all of our representatives to honor those principles, with no exceptions.”

The 35-year-old Solo, who was previously suspended for 30 days early in 2015 for her conduct, will not be eligible for selection to the national team until February.

Feigen latest swimmer to issue an apology

new york

U.S. swimmer James Feigen apologized for the “serious distraction” he and three teammates caused at a gas station during the Rio Olympics, saying he omitted facts in his statement to police.

“I omitted the facts that we urinated behind the building and that Ryan Lochte pulled a poster off the wall,” Feigen said in a statement Tuesday on the website of his lawyer in Austin, Texas.

He maintains the group didn’t force their way into a bathroom and a gun was pointed at them.

The 26-year-old Feigen said the group left the French House party around 5 a.m. in a taxi to travel back to the Athlete Village.

“We pulled over to a gas station to use the bathroom but the door was locked,” Feigen’s statement read. “We did not force entry into the bathroom, nor did we ever enter the bathroom. We did, however, make the regrettable decision to urinate in the grass behind the building.”

Feigen, who was pulled off an airplane last week by Brazilian police for more questioning, said he paid a fine of $10,800 for the return of his passport so he could travel back to the U.S.

Scrappers rally past Cyclones in 9th inning

brooklyn, N.Y.

One night after losing in extra innings, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers entered the ninth inning down by a run, but came back to beat the Brooklyn Cyclones, 6-5.

Gabriel Mejia and Todd Issacs singled to open the top of the ninth. An error sent Mejia to third before Andrew Calica’s sac-fly brought him home. Brooklyn’s Alejandro Castro chucked a wild pitch to let Issacs to third. Another wild pitch sent Issacs home for the go ahead run.

Kenny Matthews earned his second save by walking two and striking out one in a scoreless inning of work. Scrappers reliever Randy Valladares got the win by pitching a scoreless eighth, walking one and striking out one. Starter Aaron Civale struck out two in three scoreless and hitless innings. Mejia and Issacs each went 2-4 with an RBI and Nathan Winfrey added a two-run double.
