Success from Canfield safety citations

CANFIELD

Canfield police officers, in conjunction with AAA, surprised a young girl with a new bicycle and helmet after she was issued a safety citation earlier this summer.

Mark Meshula, Canfield police officer, issued Brynn Murphy, 5, daughter of Sherrie Murphy, a citation for wearing her helmet while riding her bike in July. The citation commended Brynn for her safe practice and prompted Meshula to enter her into a AAA Project HelmetSmart drawing from which she later won two prizes.

Meshula, police Chief Chuck Colucci and Lori Cook, AAA safety adviser, awarded Brynn a pink and powder-blue bike with handlebar streamers and a helmet to match.

On Tuesday afternoon, Brynn joined the winners circle as one of only three winners statewide to win Project HelmetSmart’s drawing.

Colucci said the police department consistently participates in this event, and he is honored someone cited by his team won the AAA-donated prize.

“We’ve always embraced it, and we enjoy working together with the youth of our community and making sure they stay safe while riding their bicycles,” he said.

Officers issued others citations who were also entered into the drawing, as well. Each citation is redeemable at local businesses, labeled on each ticket, for treats or discounts in Canfield.
