FAMILY FUN: roots

When: Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What: Family Fun Fridays. Each Friday, take part in fun drop-in activities in the Family Garden. Learn about the different parts of plants and what makes them grow. Special guests visit each week with activities such as yoga, storytelling and more.

NIGHT SKY WATCH

When: Friday, 9 p.m. to midnight

What: Join members of the Beech Creek Astro Club to view the night sky. The enthusiastic and knowledgeable club members will guide your observation of stars and distant celestial objects using the naked eye and telescopes.

NEIGHBORHOOD NATURALIST

When: Saturday, 2 to 5 p.m.

What: Vernal, or woodland, pools are a unique and extraordinary resource within forest ecosystems. Driven by the decay of leaf litter, these short-lived water bodies are beautifully complex, but relatively easy to create. Learn about the ecology of vernal pools, the variety of inhabitants, and how to create one.

FROM LILIAN’S GARDEN Meet the Artist

When: Sept. 3, 1 to 3 p.m.

What: The gardens of her home in Greece and in Ohio inspire the work of Vasiliki (Lilian) Filippou. Ripening olives, pinecones, brightly colored architecture, and blue seas are skillfully captured in in her watercolor works which are softly accented with gold.
