Animal-husbandry event set for Saturday

Steve Montgomery, owner of Lamppost Farm, will host a demonstration of his animal-husbandry techniques from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the farm, 14900 Market St.

Topic highlights include a calf-tagging demo and rotational grazing set up.

Montgomery raises about 60 head of grass-fed Devon cattle on his farm as well as sheep, chickens, turkeys and heritage breed pigs. Also presenting will be Andy Thomas, a reproductive technician with more than years with COBA Select Sires.

OSU Extension Trumbull County and Lake to River Food Co-Op will also host a pasture walk at 6 p.m. Sept. 1 at Miller Livestock Co., Inc., 9590 Kinsman Pymatuning Road, Kinsman.

Discussion will include specific management practices that build soil health and increase soil fertility.

Host Aaron Miller will give a tour of his farm and provide an overview of his methods of finishing beef on pasture.

Miller raises grass-fed beef and lamb and pastures pork and poultry on 150 acres and sells to restaurants, butcher shops, direct to customers and to Bon Appetit Management Co., a nationwide food-service provider.

Rory Lewandowski, agriculture and natural resource educator, OSU Extension Wayne County, will discuss all aspects of pasture management to reduce weeds, increase soil fertility, and nutritional value. Lewandowski specializes in forage grazing
