Ryan Campbell picked up a felony criminal charge accusing him of spitting on a city police officer.
Campbell, 28, was given a $3,000 bond Wednesday during his arraignment in municipal court on a felony charge of expelling a bloody fluid on a law-enforcement officer, plus misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and operating a vehicle impaired.
Assistant City Prosecutor Kathy Thompson said the felony is the first for Campbell, whose only other charge is a domestic-violence conviction in 2012, which is why his bond was so low.
Reports said Campbell was being treated about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for injuries he suffered earlier that evening in an accident in the 2500 block of Cooper Street on the South Side when he spit on the officer.
At the accident scene, Campbell swore at police and paramedics, and he refused to submit to a blood test at the hospital to determine his blood-alcohol content, reports said. He was treated at the hospital before being transferred to the Mahoning County jail late Tuesday afternoon.
Also arraigned was David Tribble, 36, who was given a bond of $6,500 on charges of felony possession of drugs, and misdemeanor charges of obstructing official business, possession of marijuana and possession of drugs.
Reports said Tribble was driving a car about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday that failed to stop at a stop sign and when an officer tried to pull him over, he pulled into a drive in the 2000 block of Weston Avenue and ran out of the car through the South Side backyard to the front yard, where he was caught.
Tribble told police he ran because he has a warrant, reports said. When he was searched, police found nine bags of suspected crack cocaine, 18 pills and a bag of suspected marijuana.
Anthony “Duke” Hopkins, 18, of Kenmore Avenue, is free on bail after being arrested about 2:25 p.m. Tuesday on charges of misdemeanor fleeing and eluding and possession of drugs. Reports said an officer noticed him run a stop sign at West Earle Avenue and Summer Street on the South Side. He would not pull over for police. Officers chased him at speeds of up to 65 mph before a supervisor called the chase off, reports said.
Officers continued to follow Hopkins at a normal speed to a home in the 100 block of West Warren Avenue reports said, where was taken into custody. Inside the car, police found a marijuana grinder and a bag of suspected marijuana, reports said. Jail records show Hopkins was released early Wednesday with a court date for later in the morning, which he attended.
Also arraigned was James Kula, 51, on charges of assault and indecent exposure after he was accused of pushing a police officer for the MercyHealth Police Department in the emergency room of St. Elizabeth’s on Monday evening. Reports said the officers were called to his room and found him there pleasuring himself with several people around. He ceased doing that but when he was walked out, he pushed an officer, reports said. He is in the jail on $5,000 bond.
He also picked up a 30-day jail sentence for contempt of court after he swore at a bailiff when his arraignment ended Wednesday.
Police cited Sasha Vazquez, 35, about 1:40 a.m. Wednesday in the 1200 block of Ivanhoe Avenue on the South Side for misuse of 911. Reports said police were called to her home to investigate a loud-music complaint. When they arrived, they saw a car parked on the front lawn and a man inside. The man ran away from the car and officers could not find him, reports said.
Vazquez then came out of the front door of the home and asked the officers, “Why are you harassing us?” When the officers tried to explain why they were there, she called 911 on her cellphone, reports said.
Police issued Vazquez a citation and a court date.
