State trooper, doctor honored for saving life

YOUNGSTOWN — A trooper with the Southington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol and an emergency room physician at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital were recognized Wednesday at the hospital with certificates of recognition for the lifesaving actions they took while off duty.

In April, Trooper Joel Hughes saw a bicyclist on the ground of a trail close to the Mill Creek Park golf course. The cyclist, Samuel Fasline, had fallen and struck his head.

Hughes, who was off duty with his family, ran to Fasline, and found he was not breathing and did not have a pulse.

Dr. Yazan Jadallah, a physician who was nearby, began chest compressions while Hughes’ daughter requested an automated external defibrillator from the golf course.

As Dr. Jadallah continued with the chest compressions, Hughes removed the victim’s shirt and used the AED to administer a shock.

Dr. Jadallah started chest compressions again while Hughes kept the victim’s airway open while checking for a pulse.

The Boardman Fire Department and Lane Ambulance arrived and took over the patient’s care. He was transported to St. Elizabeth and is doing well, the patrol said.
