‘Nosferatu’ film at Stambaugh

YOUNGSTOWN

The classic silent horror film “Nosferatu” will be screened with live pipe organ accompaniment by Peter Richard Conte at 4 p.m. Oct. 23 at Stambaugh Auditorium. While the film is free to the public, tickets are required and are available at the box office at 1000 Fifth Ave., by phone at 330-259-0555 and online at stambaughauditorium.com.

“Nosferatu” follows the tale of Thomas Hutter as he tries to sell a house across from his own to the mysterious Count Orlok who lives in a remote Transylvania castle. During his visit with the Count, Hutter begins to suspect that he may be Nosferatu, the vampire. Orlok becomes fascinated by Hutter’s wife after seeing a photo of her, and Hutter is hurt as he escapes to save her.

The 1922 film was directed by F.W. Murnau. Unable to attain the rights to Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” Murnau changed the names of the characters but kept the premise. The film stars Max Schreck as Count Orlok.

Conte is the organist of the Wanamaker Organ at Macy’s in Philadelphia. He previously performed at Stambaugh Auditorium as an accompanist for the silent films “Metropolis” in 2014 and “The Kid” in 2015.
