Brazil defeats Italy for gold medal

RIO DE JANEIRO

Brazil’s volleyball team won another sensational gold right next door to where Neymar and Co. did it less than 24 hours earlier in a thrilling penalty shootout against 2014 World Cup champion Germany.

Brazil beat mighty Italy 25-22, 28-26, 26-24 for the home team’s first Olympic men’s volleyball title since Athens in 2004.

Ohio State’s Snyder scores Olympic title

RIO DE JANEIRO

American wrestler Kyle Snyder’s run to the world title in 2015 was so surprising that some wondered if it was something of a fluke.

Snyder showed he’s for real on Sunday, adding an Olympic title to his burgeoning resume. Snyder, the youngest wrestling world champion in U.S. history, is now the sport’s youngest Olympic champion in U.S. history. The 20year-old Ohio State wrestler beat Khetag Goziumov of Azerbaijan 2-1 for gold at 97 kilograms during the men’s freestyle tournament.

“I don’t really have too big of a secret,” Snyder said. “I listen to my coaches. I train as hard as I possibly can.

“I think, if anything, my secret is that instead of thinking about winning and thinking about gold medals and stuff like that, I try to value just my effort, value my improvement and value the love that I have for the sport. That drives me every day.”

Shields becomes first to win twice

RIO DE JANEIRO

Claressa Shields won her second Olympic boxing gold medal Sunday, becoming the first American to win gold in two games.

Shields dominated the first women’s boxing tournament in London and was again the class of the middleweight division in Rio. The 21-year-old Flint, Michigan, native beat Netherlands fighter Nouchka Fontijn by unanimous decision in convincing fashion.

Shields shook and shimmied before she took her triumphant step on the medal stand. She raised her arms in victory, then pulled her 2012 London Games gold medal out of her jacket pocket and placed it around her neck.

She sang along to the national anthem, then held up both gold medals for all to see.

Shields kicked off the first of four medal bouts on the final day of the tournament that quickly turned into doubles action.

Shields showed off her two golds. Uzbekistan won two golds. And Sunday capped double gold for the first couple of the Olympic boxing tournament.

French fighter Tony Yoka joined fiancee Estelle Mossely as gold medal winners, defeating Britain’s Joe Joyce in a super heavyweight bout.

MARATHON

Kenyan wins in rainy conditions

RIO DE JANEIRO

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya sloshed his way to the gold medal in the men’s Olympic marathon as Rio de Janeiro began its grand goodbye to the 2016 Games in clammy conditions that did nothing to dampen Brazil’s frenzied mood. Feyisa Lelisa of Ethiopia finished second for the silver, and American Galen Rupp took bronze in his second marathon and Olympic debut.

The race began in an early morning drizzle while the host nation was still basking in Neymar’s kiss and impossible-to-forget penalty kick that secured the gold medal in soccer.

The nation desperately needed something to celebrate after demoralizing World Cup and Copa America failures and a host of economic, political and health woes.
