Ed and Bernie Demechko celebrate 60th anniversary

Ed Demechko and the former Bernie Slanina of Youngstown recently celebrated 60 years of marriage at a family gathering at Seagrove Beach, Fla. The couple were married on May 12, 1956, at St. Matthias Church.

The celebration included a dinner hosted by their children, Paula (Larry) Langston of Oklahoma City; Laura (Ron) Kaplan of Austin, Texas; Mark (Rudi) Demechko of Copley, Ohio; Eddie Demechko of Medina, Ohio; and Mary (Grant) Shelley of Youngstown. The couple’s nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also attended.

Mr. Demechko is a retired estimator for Hames Construction. He spends his time tending his hybrid rose and vegetable gardens. He attends Mahoning Valley Civil War Roundtable and Mahoning Valley Coin Club monthly meetings.

Mrs. Demechko is a retired secretary for Youngstown State University. She has worked as the secretary of Youngstown-Spisska Nova Ves (Slovakia) Sister Cities since its founding in 1991, and is assisting with the planning of its 25th anniversary events. She has office positions on the local, district and national levels of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. She works for their scholarship program and volunteers at St. Vincent dePaul Society dining hall.
