Greenford Lutheran Church,7450 W. South Range Road, is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year.

As part of the festivities, former pastors associated with the congregation have been invited to return as guest preachers. At the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday, the Rev. Tom Bailey, a “son of the congregation,” will preach.

The Rev. Mr. Bailey grew up in Green Township and graduated from Greenford Schools in 1961. As a member of Greenford Lutheran, he received the Greenford Lutheran Scholarship to attend Wittenberg University in Springfield, and earned a degree in psychology. He has a master of divinity degree from Hamma Evangelical Lutheran Seminary, now Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus. He was ordained at his home congregation in June 1969.

Now retired, he served churches in Virginia, where he and his wife, the former Carol Sue Oakley of East Palestine, live in Locust Grove.

Worship at college

Westminster College will begin the academic year with worship opportunities. Services are free and open to all.

The opening communion service will be from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Thursday in Wallace Memorial Chapel. Paula Kubik, college organist, will provide the prelude. Anne Bentz, associate professor of music, and William Ambert, adjunct faculty for music, will present special music. The message, “Celebrate the Light,” will be given by the Rev. James Mohr, college chaplain.

The first vespers service is planned at 7 p.m. Aug. 28 in Wallace chapel. The weekly vespers service includes preaching by the Rev. Mr. Mohr or a guest speaker. Music is offered by one of the Westminster College vocal or bell choirs and the Second Chance Praise Team.

Dr. Darwin Huey, professor of education, will begin the first Open Door Reflection at 11:40 a.m. Sept. 2 in Wallace chapel. The sessions are set Mondays and Fridays throughout the year and include music, prayer, scripture readings and a reflective moment provided by a Westminster senior, faculty or staff member or guest speaker.

Ordination event

YOUNGSTOWN

Four Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) seminary graduates will be ordained as pastors into the Ministry of Word and Sacrament at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 27 in Zion Lutheran Church, 3300 Canfield Road.

Northeastern Ohio Synod Bishop, the Rev. Abraham D. Allende, will preach and preside at Holy Communion for this service of ordination, which will be followed by a reception served by the congregation. Host pastor, the Rev. Duane Jesse, will offer greetings.

The four ordinands – Erin Burns, Lucas Merritt, Scott Nellis and Emily Seitz – are serving their first congregations.

Northeastern Ohio Synod of the ELCA encompasses 173 congregations and more than 61,000 baptized members and numerous agencies, organizations, care facilities and camps serving 20 counties throughout Northeast Ohio.

Elevation ceremony

Elder James A. Jethroe of Deliverance Apostolic International Inc. will be elevated to the office of presiding bishop of DAI in an elevation ceremony at 3 p.m. Aug. 27 at Deliverance Temple Church of the Apostolic Faith, 1849 West Ave.

Participating will be Honorable Presiding Prelate Bishop Earnest J. Miller, founder of Faith Apostolic Worldwide Inc. and founder and pastor of Greater Harvest Worship Center in Greenwood, Miss. Other bishops will participate; all should have ceremonial robes.
