Man climbs Colorado tree to avoid police

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.

A suspect in an assault tried to avoid police by climbing a Colorado tree and staying there for hours.

The 30-year-old man camped out in the Colorado Springs tree for about five hours Sunday evening, climbing down after police used tear gas and sprayed him with water.

Police say Lane Malouff was wanted on suspicion of assaulting the mother of his children and trying to strangle her in June in the small southern city of Alamosa.

During the standoff, officers didn’t know if Malouff was armed, so they evacuated several nearby homes as a precaution. But residents seemed more amused than alarmed.

Colorado Springs news station KKTV reports that a crowd formed along the line of crime tape, with many taking videos and photos.

Prankster changes electronic road sign

BUFFALO, N.Y.

A prankster’s changes to the message on an electronic roadside sign in Buffalo may be causing motorists to smile, but New York State Police aren’t amused.

WIVB-TV reports someone accessed the keyboard on a sign along Route 198 in Delaware Park on Monday and changed the message to read: “It’s All A Dream.”

The same sign Tuesday flashed “I Love You” before crews shut it down.

The government-agencies coalition responsible for the sign’s traffic messages says it operates them on behalf of a contractor for the state Department of Transportation. The department says it is the contractor’s responsibility to make sure the sign’s keyboard panel is fully locked

Dueling obituaries name wife and girlfriend

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.

Two versions of a New Jersey man’s obituary have appeared together in a newspaper — one saying he’s survived by his wife, and the other saying he’s survived by his girlfriend.

Both obituaries in the Press of Atlantic City agree that Leroy Bill Black, of Egg Harbor Township, died of lung cancer.

However, the obituary with top billing says he’s survived by his “loving wife” and a son. The second announcement, right beneath the first one with the same photo of Black, says he’s survived by his son, a host of siblings and his long-time girlfriend.
