Austintown Township Park has recently completed some new additions to the park, including a playground and a pickleball court.
The new playground, named after Walter Terlecky, opened in June and is still installing new equipment for the children. The playground will be getting a set of monkey bars and a spiral slide. One of the favorites among the families is the adult-child swing.
“Moms line up for it. We have two swings and I’ve seen the line six or seven moms deep,” said Todd Shaffer, Park Supervisor.
Terlecky, who previously owned the Westchester building, gave it to the Austintown township on the condition that they would use the money made from the building to improve the community and benefit the youth. The old playground was 21-years-old and was starting to become unsafe for the children to play on.
The playground is divided into two areas with certain equipment, one for child ages 18 months to 5-years-old and one for children 5-13 years-old. This allows the children to play with others closer to their age and have equipment that is more suited for children in that age group.
The new addition of the pickleball court has been a huge hit among many of the guests at Austintown Township Park. There are people playing pickleball from early in the morning when the courts open to night time until the sun goes down.
“This morning we had standing room only, there were several people waiting,” said Shaffer.
Shaffer and the Austintown board of trustees are continually looking for ways to improve the park and enhance the experience of the guests.
