Did Bolt’s Olympic dash trigger scare at JFK airport?

NEW YORK

Did boisterous celebrations over an Olympic victory by the world’s fastest man lead to a false alarm about gunfire and a panicked evacuation of Kennedy Airport?

That’s one of the possibilities police were exploring Monday as they reviewed security camera footage and interviewed witnesses about the chain-reaction scare that rippled through two airport terminals Sunday night in the minutes after Usain Bolt sprinted to a gold medal victory in the 100-meter dash.

An internal New York Police Department briefing document, obtained by The Associated Press, said a preliminary video review showed that some travelers had started to act “extremely disruptive” while watching the Olympics on televisions in Terminal 8.

That set off a chain reaction, with other people running away from the commotion, the document said.

Then, at 9:34 p.m., about seven minutes after Bolt’s run, police received an anonymous 911 call from a woman reporting gunshots in the terminal.

MLK Jr.’s Nobel medal, Bible to be released to estate

ATLANTA

A judge Monday signed an order ending an ownership dispute over the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s traveling Bible and Nobel Peace Prize medal that had essentially pitted the slain civil-rights leader’s two sons against their sister.

The consent order signed by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney says the items are to be released to Martin Luther King III as chairman of the board of his father’s estate but does not indicate what will happen to them after that.

The parties released a joint statement Monday saying the details of the settlement are confidential.

King’s three surviving children – Martin, Dexter Scott King and Bernice King – are the sole shareholders and directors of the estate. Dexter is its president and CEO.

Possible gang members abducted

mexico city

Armed men abducted 10 to 12 presumed members of a crime gang who appeared to be celebrating at an upscale restaurant in the popular Mexican beach resort city of Puerto Vallarta, authorities said Monday.

Jalisco state prosecutor Eduardo Almaguer said at a news conference that preliminary results of the investigation indicated that all involved – kidnappers and kidnapped – were members of criminal organizations.

He said authorities believe they know which groups were involved, but declined to name them.

The Jalisco New Generation cartel has become the dominant criminal force in the state. It has battled the powerful Sinaloa cartel for supremacy in other parts of the country, such as Baja California Sur.

Airstrike hits hospital in Yemen; 11 killed

SANAA, YEMEN

An airstrike hit a hospital supported by Doctors Without Borders in northern Yemen on Monday, the international humanitarian group said, killing at least 11 people and wounding at least 19 others.

The group, known by the French acronym MSF, said the strike hit the hospital near the Houthi rebel stronghold of Saada, where teams were attending to the wounded.

MSF said the hospital, which the group had been supporting since July 2015, was partially destroyed. All remaining patients and staff were evacuated.

The conflict in Yemen pits an internationally-recognized government backed by a Saudi-led coalition against the Shiite Houthi rebels, who captured the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014.
