Austintown Fitch hires baseball coach

AUSTINTOWN

Austintown School District hired a new baseball coach, Joe Paris, to replace retired coach Wally Ford, the school announced on Monday.

Paris is a Fitch High School alumnus and Austintown Middle School teacher. He played baseball for The University of Akron baseball team.

Athletic Director Lewis VanHoose said in a news release that Paris is a positive addition to the Austintown community because of his “passion, experience and knowledge” he brings to the classroom and the field.

Boardman boosters to honor H.O.F. class

The Boardman Booster Club will honor the Boardman Hall of Fame Class of 2016 on Sept. 25 at the Lake Club.

Warren H.O.F to host Pigskin Preview

The 2016 Warren Sports Hall of Fame Pigskin Preview is on Sunday at Dilucia’s Banquet Center in Warren starting at 5 p.m.

The guest speaker is George Kearney, Warren Harding Panthers player and coach at several different levels of football. There will also be interviews with each of the Trumbull County football coaches concerning their upcoming seasons.

Tickets on sale at Springfield

The Springfield Local Athletic Department will begin selling reserve seats and season tickets on Wednesday.

On Friday, Springfield will host Salem in a Football Jamboree Scrimmage beginning at 7 p.m, All tickets cost $5 and will be sold at the gate.

Youth football team to host auction

AUSTINTOWN

The Austintown Colts youth football team is hosting a fund-raising quarter auction on Thursday at the Youngstown Saxon Club on South Meridian Road. Doors open at 5 p.m. and bidding starts at 6 p.m. All proceeds from the auction and raffles go to team.

Strader wins Michigan Senior Olympics

AUBURN HILLS, MI.

Salem native Randy Strader took home a good medal in the shot put and a silver medal in the discus at the Michigan Senior Olympics on Saturday at Oakland University in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Strader will compete in the United States Senior Olympics for the ninth time next summer.

Easley a finalist for NFL Hall of Fame

CANTON

Safety Kenny Easley was selected as the Senior Finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017. Easley was picked by the Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee that met in Canton today.

Easley was selected out of UCLA by the Seattle Seahawks as the fourth player overall in the 1981 NFL Draft. He embarked on a spectacular seven-year career during which he recorded multiple interceptions each season. In all, he amassed 32 interceptions which he returned for 538 yards and 3 TDs. He was also noted as a dominant tackler and added 8 career sacks. His finest season came in 1984 when he was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year when he registered a league-leading 10 interceptions and two pick-sixes. Easley was named first-team All-Pro four straight years (1982-85) and voted to five Pro Bowls. He is also a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1980s.
