Trustees enter into one-year contract

LIBERTY

Township trustees voted Friday to enter into a one-year contract with human-resources firm Clemans Nelson & Associates of Akron.

Trustees said they plan to use the firm for 2016 contract negotiations.

The contract stipulates the township will pay a consultant a $175 monthly retainer, in addition to an hourly rate for on-site visits. The hourly rates are $95 for a consultant; $135 for a senior consultant; $150 for a manager; and $160 for a director, vice president or president.

For each visit, a consultant must receive pay for at least four hours of work and reimbursement for travel.

The contract extends through Aug. 11, 2017.

Fire destroys vacant home on East Side

YOUNGSTOWN

Fire reports said a vacant 490 Sunshine Ave. home on the East Side was destroyed by fire Thursday.

Crews found a heavy fire inside the home when they arrived at about 6:30 p.m., reports said.

The cause is under investigation.

Inmate assaults deputies at jail

YOUNGSTOWN

For the second time in little more than a month, an inmate is accused of assaulting deputies at the Mahoning County jail.

Officials at the sheriff’s office say it happened in a jail classroom at about 3 p.m. Friday, according to a report by 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

An inmate who was being transferred to the disciplinary range punched a sergeant three times and also punched another deputy.

Deputies from other parts of the jail were called to help subdue the inmate, whose name was not released.

Injuries to the sergeant are not serious.

In early July, jail officials say inmate Lucky Mitchell tried to strangle a deputy with a T-shirt until he was subdued by fellow inmates, the TV station reported.

Neighborhood meeting set for Tuesday

YOUNGSTOWN

The Garden District Neighborhood Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Colonial Hall at St. John Lutheran Church, 1429 Mahoning Ave. President Jerry O’Hara will officiate.

Councilman Mike Ray, D-4th, will update the group on activities on the West Side and throughout the city. Guest speaker will be Gary Davenport, who will discuss activities of the Mahoning County Land Bank and its effect on the Garden District.

Austintown to host training opportunity

AUSTINTOWN

Austintown School District will host a training opportunity for 32 schools and 458 school bus drivers Tuesday at Austintown Middle School, 800 S. Raccoon Road.

The training begins at 8 a.m. and meets the four-hour training requirement.

Robert Harmon, Ohio Department of Education transportation director, and Lt. Marvin Hill, commander of District 4 licensing and commercial standards, will speak to drivers.
