YOUNGSTOWN

Donald J. Trump is

scheduled to make an appearance in the city at 2 p.m. Monday at Youngstown State University, according to the GOP presidential candidate’s website.

Trump last appeared in the Mahoning Valley in March when he made a campaign stop at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna during his effort to become the GOP standard-bearer.

His Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, appeared at East High School last month.

“It is very exciting to have Trump visit Youngstown. He has built so much excitement and support in the Mahoning Valley,” said Mark Monroe, chairman of the Mahoning County Republican Party.

Monroe said there are 21,000 new Republicans in Mahoning County, most of whom became Republican because they’re excited by Trump’s candidacy.

“What we’re looking forward to is Trump continuing to make the case that Hillary has totally disqualified herself from becoming president. She and her husband can’t be trusted on their promise to bring more jobs to the Valley. Her husband made that promise in 1992 for the Valley ... and once Clinton was elected, the Valley was ignored. I think they [the Clintons] would say or do anything to get elected,” Monroe said.

“Trump may say a lot of things that turn people’s heads,” the GOP leader acknowledged, “but he has a pretty good track record of getting things done that people say are impossible.”

“What people here really like about Trump is that he is a fighter, a scrapper. That fits in very well with the Mahoning Valley spirit,” Monroe said.

David Betras, chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, however, sees the maverick candidate’s visit in a different light.

“Trump likes to talk about putting America first, but he never did that as a businessman,” Betras said in a statement. “Trump outsourced his own business products instead of making them in Ohio factories or anywhere else in the United States. Trump ties are made in China. Trump shirts in Bangladesh. Trump furniture in Turkey. Trump picture frames in India. And, Trump barware in Slovenia.”

“I hope Trump is here to explain himself, because he can’t make America great again, if he doesn’t make things in America,” Betras said.
