SWIMMING

Manuel shares gold in 100-meter freestyle

Simone Manuel of the United States and 16-year-old Penny Oleksiak of Canada tied for the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter freestyle, upsetting world-record holder Cate Campbell.

Manuel becomes the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming.

Campbell was on pace to take her world record even lower when she made the turn out front, with little sister Bronte right behind her. But the Australian siblings, who teamed up to lead their country to gold in the 4x100 freestyle relay, couldn’t hang on.

Bronte faded to fourth, and Cate dropped all the way to sixth at the finish.

Instead, it was Manuel — her fingernails painted red, white and blue — who touched at the same time as Oleksiak, the youngest swimmer in the field.

Manuel broke down in tears when she recognized her historic achievement in a sport that still has few African-Americans.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Anderson, Americans surprise Brazlians

Matt Anderson and his U.S. men’s volleyball teammates stunned the Brazilians in four sets to deny the previously unbeaten host nation a quarterfinal berth.

After two forgettable preliminary matches and facing the real possibility of near-Olympic elimination, Anderson led the charge for a roster packed with Olympic first-timers.

Anderson brought it with a spot-on jump serve, big hitting and reliable passing in a 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20 victory that left the raucous, flag-waving pro-Brazil crowd at Maracanazinho arena in disbelief.

The U.S. win snapped a four-match losing streak to Brazil in international competition since winning the World League gold medal on July 20, 2014.

FIELD HOCKEY

U.S. women top India to remain unbeaten

The U.S. women’s field hockey team improved to 4-0 and will play Britain on Saturday to determine who will win Pool B.

Katie Bam scored two goals and helped the U.S. defeat India 3-0 Thursday night.

Bam scored in the first and third periods, and Melissa Gonzalez added a goal in the fourth.

Goalie Jackie Briggs notched her first shoutout of the Games against India after allowing a single goal in each of the team’s first three matches.

The United States already had clinched a slot in the quarterfinals. They got off to a strong start by knocking off No. 2 Argentina and No. 3 Australia in their first two matches.

SOCCER

Neymar expected to compete Saturday

rio de janeiro

It was a scary scene for Brazilian fans at the team’s arrival in Sao Paulo for the quarterfinals of the Olympic soccer tournament: Neymar limping heavily and with his ankle wrapped up.

But the Brazilian football confederation says exams conducted on the star striker’s right foot on Thursday showed no serious injuries.

Neymar is expected to practice on Friday and be fully fit to play in Saturday’s match against Colombia at the Arena Corinthians.

Neymar did not show signs of the injury in Brazil’s 4-0 win over Denmark on Wednesday in Salvador, a result that kept alive the hosts’ dream of winning the soccer gold medal for the first time.

He was able to play through the injury but it required treatment after the match and raised some concerns.
