Lawn penalties

Lawn penalties

LOWELLVILLE

Village council voted this week to set penalties for unkempt lawns.

The ordinance forbids letting grass grow more than 7 inches tall on developed properties or more than 10 inches tall on undeveloped properties. Growth of “noxious weeds” is also prohibited, along with plants that obstruct the sidewalk. Upon the first offense, violation of the ordinance is punishable as a minor misdemeanor. Fines can range from $250 to $1,000.

Council also reduced pay for the part-time tax commissioner from $10,000 a year to $350 a month. Councilman William Flora cited the commissioner’s reduced work load since the village began using the Regional Income Tax Agency for tax collection.
