Freshman player dies after practice

CHADRON, NEB.

A football player at a small college in western Nebraska has died following the team’s practice Thursday.

Chadron State College officials said 20-year-old freshman Eric Goll of Haines City, Florida, was taken from the practice field to Chadron Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 12:30 p.m.

No cause of death was announced. Chadron police and the Dawes County Attorney’s office are investigating.

Coach Jay Long said Goll was one of the happiest people had ever met and that the hearts of the players and coaches are broken for Goll’s family.

Attorney: Panel rules charge unfounded

KNOXVILLE, TENN.

The lawyer for suspended Tennessee defensive lineman Alexis Johnson says a student disciplinary panel has determined an allegation against his client was unfounded.

Gregory Isaacs relayed that information Thursday in a tweet and statement.

Tennessee interim vice chancellor Jacob Rudolph said that “we are unable to discuss any student conduct situation.”

Johnson, who signed with Tennessee in December, has been suspended from the team since his February arrest on charges of false imprisonment and aggravated assault. The false imprisonment charge was dismissed and the aggravated assault was reduced to misdemeanor domestic assault April 21, and prosecutors agreed to drop all charges if he avoided trouble for the next six months.

Former Aggies coach Tom Wilson dies

CORSICANA, TEXAS

Former Texas A&M football coach Tom Wilson has died.

The school announced Wilson died Wednesday in Corsicana after battling cancer. He was 72.

An official with Griffin-Roughton (ROW’-ton) Funeral Home in Corsicana, Billy Roughton, said Thursday that Wilson died at home with family at his side.

Wilson was Texas Tech’s quarterback from 1964-1965, going 14-7-1. He was a Red Raiders assistant before joining the Aggies in 1975, as offensive coordinator then head coach in 1978. Wilson was 21-19 with A&M through 1981.

VANDERBILT

Vandy, Colorado State agree to meet in series

NASHVILLE, TENN.

Vanderbilt and Colorado State have scheduled a four-game series beginning in 2020 that includes two home matchups for each team spread out over six years.

The agreement was announced Thursday. Vanderbilt and Colorado State have never faced each other.

This series will begin when Vanderbilt hosts Colorado State on Sept. 26, 2020. The two teams will meet again at Colorado State on Sept. 11, 2021.

The final two games of the series are scheduled to take place during the 2025 and 2026 seasons. The teams will meet at Vanderbilt on Sept. 27, 2025. Colorado State will host the Commodores on Sept. 26, 2026.

GEORGIA

Former LB Kimbrough plans to transfer

ATLANTA

Georgia senior linebacker Tim Kimbrough says he will transfer to a Division II school after being forced off the team by coach Kirby Smart.

Kimbrough told The Associated Press in a phone interview Thursday that Smart said “he was going to kick me off the team or I had to transfer.”

Kimbrough, who was third on the team with 67 tackles last season, did not participate in practice Wednesday.

Smart said afterward that Kimbrough was on “a little leave of absence.” He did not elaborate, and the school has not released a statement.

Classes at Georgia begin Thursday.
