Delta computer outage included a ‘small fire’

NEW YORK

As flight cancellations and delays move into their fourth day, Delta Air Lines isn’t providing details on a “small fire” Monday at its data center and whether that fire – or attempts to extinguish it – compounded the airline’s troubles.

Delta’s problems started early Monday morning when a piece of electrical component at its Atlanta headquarters failed, CEO Ed Bastian told The Associated Press on Wednesday. That led to a shutdown of the transformer providing power to the airline’s data center. The system moved to backup power, but not all of the servers were connected to that source, which caused the cascading problem.

But that initial failure also caused a fire. The airline is refusing to detail the extent of that fire – and the damage it caused.

Video at Tyson chicken farms prompts firings

NORFOLK, Va.

An animal-rights group on Thursday released an undercover video that shows Tyson Foods workers abusing and cruelly killing chickens at Virginia breeding facilities, prompting the company to fire 10 employees.

“We’re disgusted by a video showing improper treatment of birds,” the Arkansas company tweeted to its nearly 50,000 followers.

Christine Daugherty, a Tyson vice president, wrote in a statement that she was “outraged.” She said the workers “were all trained in proper animal handling, yet chose to ignore it.”

The company said it will “aggressively re-emphasize” its animal welfare policies to workers and end a practice known as “boning.” It involves inserting a piece of plastic in a male bird’s nostrils to stop it from accessing a female chicken’s feeder.
