SHENANGO TOWNSHIP, PA.

Authorities are working to identify human remains found shortly after noon Tuesday in a shallow grave on property off Mercer West Middlesex Road (state Route 318) in Shenango Township in Mercer County, Pa.

Sharon, Pa., police Chief Gerald Smith and Shenango Township Police Chief Jason Newton spoke Wednesday night about what they have been calling an “active major crime scene,” according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

Authorities said Smith may have been involved in the investigation because the body might be that of a missing Sharon resident. The remains are from one body, and the death has not yet been labeled a homicide. A press conference is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today in the Shenango Township Police Department.
