RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Defending Olympic gold medalist Serena Williams has lost in the third round of singles tournament.

The top-seeded player in the women's tennis tournament at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics got upset today by Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, deprived of a chance to defend the gold medal she won four years ago in London.

Earlier, Williams and her sister, Venus, were ousted in the ladies doubles tournament.
