Police: Warren man shoots himself in hand during domestic violence incident

LIBERTY

Police believe a man shot himself in the hand during an altercation which resulted in charges against another man.

Freeman Dobyne, 22, of Youngstown faces charges of domestic violence and aggravated burglary.

A police report states a 20-year-old woman told officers Dobyne, her boyfriend, had forced his way into her Galeta Avenue home Friday by breaking through a screen door and cutting his arm in the process. The woman said Dobyne threatened to harm her and her 18-year-old sister.

Witnesses told police that the 18-year-old sister was fearful of Dobyne and took a gun from a bedroom and “cocked” it. The police report states the women’s brother, a 19-year-old Warren man, arrived at the residence with his girlfriend and took the gun from his sister. While attempting to render the gun safe, the brother accidentally shot himself in the hand, witnesses said,

The brother initially told police he sustained the injury to his hand from a shooting in Warren, but later said he fired the gun while practicing for the shooting range, the report states.

Officers seized two guns from the Galeta Avenue home. Officers found a broken screen door and a large amount of blood outside the home.

Police have issued a warrant for Dobyne’s arrest on domestic-violence and aggravated-burglary charges.

The shooting involving the brother remains under investigation.
