Relay for Life picnic planned in Campbell

The Blood and Cancer Center will host a Relay for Life picnic from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 19 at Roosevelt Park, 520 Sycamore Drive.
The annual event provides patients and their families with a chance to celebrate life, Wyntre Wasilewski, a lab technician at the center, said.
“We all come together as one,” Wasilewski said.
More than 150 people attended the picnic last summer.

Get free backpack Saturday at Covelli
YOUNGSTOWN
Children will be able to get free backpacks for school Saturday at the Covelli Centre.
The giveaway will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with registration starting at 10 a.m. This marks the third year for the giveaway through a partnership of the city, city schools, NOW Youngstown and the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence. Food and other activities also will be part of the festivities. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Lincoln Knolls event

The East Side Better Block event, sponsored by the Lincoln Knolls Community Watch, will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Lincoln Knolls Plaza on McCartney Road.
Pop-up businesses, an art gallery, performances, a cafe, street trees, a farmers market and outdoor seating will demonstrate what the plaza could be. The goal is to be a catalyst for more permanent improvements that will support and promote local artists and businesses, event organizers said.
Other supporters are: Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp., William Swanston Charitable Fund, Community Foundations of the Mahoning Valley, Northeast Homeowners Association, Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, the city, and Councilman T.J.
