Lloyd’s goal gives U.S. win over France

belo horizonte, brazil

Hope Solo was unaffected by the Brazilian boos as she made her 200th international appearance.

Solo came up big as the United States fought off France 1-0 on Saturday in an Olympic group match at Mineirao Stadium. Carli Lloyd scored the lone goal for the Americans.

Solo became the first goalkeeper, male or female, to reach the 200-cap mark in international play. She also became just the 11th U.S. player to reach that number of appearances.

Despite the milestone, Solo was still peppered with jeers from the crowd, who were riled up about social media posts she made about the threat of the Zika virus.

The U.S. women are vying for their fourth straight gold medal. With consecutive wins to open the Olympics, the United States is in good position for the quarterfinals.

Lloyd broke through in the 64th minute against France goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi. Tobin Heath’s shot caromed off the post and while Bouhaddi struggled to recover, Lloyd tapped in the rebound for her eighth Olympic goal.

Serbs capsize in choppy Rio water

rio de janeiro

After all the talk about staying out of the water in Rio de Janeiro, Serbian rowers Milos Vasic and Nenad Benik found themselves immersed in it on Day 1 of the Olympic regatta.

The Serb pair capsized — a rare sight at elite rowing events — in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, where choppy waters left athletes struggling to stay in their boats.

“I can’t recall ever being in a race where one of the crews has capsized,” said New Zealand rower Hamish Bond, who won the qualifying heat with partner Eric Murray. “It’s unfortunate for them.”

Vasic and Benik overturned halfway through the 2-kilometer course. Stunned and soaked, they clung to their boat as the other three crews continued toward the finish line.

Normally crews need to cross the finish line to compete in the next round — swimming with their boat if necessary. But to save time race officials dropped that requirement, plucked the Serbs from the water and gave them a pass to compete in the repechage.

Bond said the conditions were at the “upper limit of what you hope to row in,” but didn’t think it was unfair because it was the same for everyone.

Kalisz wins 400 IM heat on first day in pool

rio de janeiro

Chase Kalisz of the United States qualified fastest in the 400-meter individual medley preliminaries on the first day of the Olympic swimming competition.

Kalisz (KAY-lish) won his heat in 4 minutes, 8.12 seconds on Saturday after overtaking Daiya Seto of Japan, who was second-quickest in 4:08.47 in the same heat.

Seto’s teammate, Kosuke Hagino, was third-fastest in 4:10.00. American Jay Litherland qualified fourth in 4:11.10 going into the eight-man late-night final.

The grueling event featuring all four strokes — butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle — was missing its two biggest stars. Michael Phelps, the world record holder and two-time Olympic champion, dropped the race for his fifth games and defending champion Ryan Lochte didn’t qualify.
