Special education
Jacob Hackett, an Ursuline High School graduate, has earned a doctor of philosophy degree in special education from the University of Washington.
He is a son of Frank and Jeanne Chimento of Youngstown and Dan Hackett of Austintown, and grandson of Catherine Hackett, also of Austintown.
Hackett earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in special education from Ohio State University. In 2009, he was a winner of the Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education in recognition of his creation of an intensive six-week summer literacy camp that focused on helping students improve their reading fluency and comprehensive skills while improving character development.
He participated in a research project in Cambodia during the summer 2013 that brought together an interdisciplinary team that focused on the rights of children with disabilities. He presented a paper in 2014 in Braga, Portugal, “Embracing Inclusive Approaches for Children and Youth with Special Needs.”
He has accepted a position as a clinical professor at Georgia State University, where he will continue to pursue his research and teach in its special-education program.
