Driver injured

JOHNSTON

The male driver of a car was injured when his vehicle went off state Route 88 near the intersection of Porter Drive and Stoddard-Hayes Road and struck a utility pole about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The crash, which occurred in the 4000 block of the highway, is under investigation by the Trumbull County Sheriff’s department. The identity and condition of the driver is unknown, but people who reported the crash to the Trumbull County 911 Center said the driver was lying in the street.

Man found in lake

LISBON

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is investigating the death of a 34-year-old man found around 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Guilford Lake.

The lake was searched with a sonar-equipped boat and search dogs were used on the shore, reported 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

The ODNR says a man reportedly jumped off a boat at 5 a.m. Saturday and did not return. Area fire department personnel assisted in the search.

Shooting injures 2

WARREN

Warren police are investigating a shooting at 5:30 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Burton Street and Niles Road that resulted in injuries to two people.

According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, Warren police reported that one of the victims, 27, whose condition is unknown, was flown to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

A second victim, 32, was released after treatment at a hospital, and was arrested on active warrants.

Police did not release the names of the victims, and no arrests were reported.

Discussing city schools

YOUNGSTOWN

The Buckeye Review will host an event discussing the city schools from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Gilead Baptist Church, 2821 Hillman Ave.

The event will be narrated by Dr. Linda McNair. Guests will include Brian Benyo, chairman of the Youngstown City Schools Academic Distress Commission, and Krish Mohip, the school district’s chief executive officer.

College of Distinction

GREENVILLE, PA.

Thiel College’s innovative application of high-impact educational practices earned it honors as a 2016-17 College of Distinction, according to a college news release.

The designation recognizes select schools for excellence in student-focused higher education.

Thiel students participate in study-abroad experiences, service learning, student-faculty research, rigorous academic programs and internships that are available as soon as the second semester of their first year.

These educational practices – along with the college’s 10-to-1 student-faculty ratio and 94 percent placement rate in graduate school or employment for 2014 and 2015 graduates – were among the benchmarks used to establish Thiel College as a College of Distinction.

Back2School event

YOUNGSTOWN

Happy Campers Learning Center, 518 E. Indianola Blvd., will host the third annual Back2School Trick or Treat event from 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 28.

Local businesses and organizations are coming together to offer school supplies to parents in need.

Participants are asked to bring their children’s backpacks to collect supplies from each table.

WRTA receives award

YOUNGSTOWN

The Western Reserve Transit Authority has received the auditor of state award for having an exemplary financial audit.

The award is given to entities that file timely financial reports in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and have no findings for recovery, significant deficiencies or material citations or weaknesses.

Mathews Band Night

VIENNA

Mathews Music Boosters and the Mathews Marching Mustangs have scheduled several marching bands to perform at the annual Mathews Band Night, 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at Booster Field at the end of Sheridan Drive off state Route 193.

Tickets available at the door are $5, senior citizens are $3.50, and children under 6 get in free.
