Jail finds drugs in children’s drawings
SOMERVILLE, N.J.
A woman is accused of using children’s drawings to smuggle prescription drugs to her boyfriend in a New Jersey jail.
Somerset County Sheriff Frank Provenzano said staff noticed something strange about mail addressed to inmate Michael Gill on June 15. A K-9 unit was called and alerted on what turned out to be the opioid Suboxone concealed in the drawings, authorities said. The prescription drug produces a high when used alone and is used to help heroin addicts.
The sheriff said another letter with children’s drawings addressed to Gill arrived June 20, and more mail was sent to the jail eight days later. Again, suspected Suboxone was found hidden in the drawings, authorities said.
The sheriff told the Courier News of Bridgewater that to prevent copycats, he won’t disclose how the drug was concealed in the drawings.
Authorities charged 37-year-old Casey Giles, of Bridgewater, with possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance. She was jailed on $20,000 bail. Gill, of Oxford, was charged with attempting to possess a controlled dangerous substance, and his bail was set at $10,000.
Bears put on a show by splashing around busy Lake Tahoe
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.
Some unusual visitors joined the crowds of swimmers and kayakers trying to cool off on Lake Tahoe – a bear and a pair of cubs.
Pallas Buckley, who lives near South Lake Tahoe, took video of the rare sight this week: the animals frolicking and splashing in the water near the beach while people paddled nearby, seemingly unfazed.
She said her fellow lakegoers watched the spectacle but stayed respectful of the bears. Buckley said she’s seen many bears, but spotting them on the beach was a first.
Wildlife experts told TV station KTVN in Reno, Nev., that it’s unusual for bears to visit a busy area, raising concerns they’re used to being around people.
They said the bears could’ve come down for food or to cool off during the drought.
Police union calls for resignation of mayor amid strip-poker claim
SAN FRANCISCO
A police union has called for the resignation of a California mayor who prosecutors say audio-recorded a game of strip poker that included a 16-year-old boy and at least four other young adults at a camp for underprivileged children run by the mayor.
The allegations against Stockton Mayor Anthony Silva are “more than just a black eye” for the city, Stockton Police Officers Association spokesman Lee Neves said Thursday.
“This is a devastating body blow,” he said. “Given what has gone on over the past two weeks, he’s just not able to effectively govern or represent the city anymore.”
The allegations emerged after the financially stressed city emerged from bankruptcy protection last year.
Silva was charged in Amador County on Thursday with misdemeanor counts of furnishing alcohol to minors and child endangerment, and with a felony count of secretly recording confidential communications without consent. He has denied the charges.
