Apprenticeship grants available

YOUNGSTOWN

The Greater Oh-Penn Manufacturing Apprenticeship Network created a group-sponsored apprenticeship model that is available to additional manufacturers interested in training machinists. This U.S. Department of Labor grant provides reimbursement funding to companies in the network’s 14-county region. Companies that join the group model early are eligible for a reimbursement of up to $6,000 per apprentice.

Companies that register a new apprenticeship program and sign up for the network’s group-sponsored model by Sept. 30 are eligible for a $6,000 reimbursement. After Sept. 30, companies will be eligible for a $5,000 reimbursement.

WP Glimcher reports 2nd-quarter income

COLUMBUS

WP Glimcher, parent company of Southern Park Mall in Boardman, reported second-quarter net income of $17.8 million, compared with $3.9 million reported in the second quarter of 2015.

The year-over-year improvement is primarily attributable to a net gain of $34.1 million related to the ownership transfer of two properties and the subsequent cancellation of outstanding mortgage debt of $115.3 million, partially offset by higher merger, restructuring and transaction costs compared with a year ago.

Funds from operations for the second quarter of 2016 were $98.1 million, compared with $95.2 million reported in the second quarter of 2015.

Dad charged in hot-car deaths of his twin toddlers

CARROLLTON, Ga.

Police charged a father with manslaughter Friday in the deaths of his 15-month-old twin girls, alleging that he had been drinking before leaving them in their car seats in 90-degree temperatures.

Witnesses heard screams and saw Asa North running as he carried the toddlers from the parking lot in front of their home to an inflatable pool out back. Neighbors joined him, frantically trying to revive the girls with water and ice packs. Emergency responders later tried CPR.

But the unresponsive girls soon were declared dead at a nearby hospital.

Outside temperatures were in the 90s on Thursday before police were called at 6:34 p.m. Investigators were trying to determine how long the girls remained in the parked car, but it would take only a few minutes for the heat to become unbearable.
