The Canfield High School Soccer Boosters hosted its eighth annual Canfield Cardinal Classic Soccer Tournament July 9-10 with 44 schools participating in the two-day event. Five fields were in use, all located on the high school grounds and including the stadium, with several school bringing two or more teams to play 40-minute games.
The tournament was took place throughout two days, with the boys’ teams playing Saturday and the girls’ teams playing Sunday.
Teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania participated in the boys’ and girls’ divisions and included Canfield, Poland, Newton Falls, Niles, Crestview, East Liverpool, Beaver Local, Campbell, Carrollton, Austintown Fitch, Salem, Harding, Howland, Kirtland, Boardman and Girard, along with numerous teams from the Akron, Cleveland and Columbus areas.
The Cardinal Classic is a key fundraiser for the Canfield High School boys and girls soccer program, and was organized by the parent members of the Canfield Soccer Boosters, with Rob Accordino serving as president.
Proceeds from the tournament are used to buy new uniforms, team camp and tournament fees.
The goal of the tournament was to give the coaches a chance to view the players pre-season and to prepare for the fall season. Coaches used this opportunity to see the players with the ball and to learn what the team needs to work on for the upcoming fall season. It also gave the coaches a chance to watch the players and get a sense of which players to select for the junior varsity and varsity teams.
The tournament also had community support and corporate sponsors, which included Zim’s Max-Freeze, Simon Roofing, Rise Pies, VSN Athletic Performance and Fitness Center, Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, Mercy Health Rehabilitation Services, York Mahoning Mechanical Contractors, Pharmacy Care, Bury Financial Group, Cocca’s Pizza, Fusillo Flooring Company, Melissa Mullane Padgett, D.D.S., McCamon-Hunt Insurance Agency, Rogue Wave Auto Wash, Schwebel’s, Two Men and a Truck, Mill Creek Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery Center, Home Savings, Hunter-Stevens Land Title Agency LTD, Trolio’s of Boardman, Titan LED, Pinnacle Health Concepts, Klacik Real Estate, KRK Associates, I Do Weddings, Canfield Massotherapy and Neuromuscular Center, Komara Jewelers and Thomas R. Kupec, LPCC.
„ÄÄCanfield Soccer Boosters parents volunteered at the tournament in every aspect from the concession stand to selling T-shirts to helping set up the tournament the day before and cleaning up when it was over. Members of the Canfield High School National Honor Society were also able to earn service hours by volunteering at the tournament.
Canfield Soccer Boosters President Rob Accordino thanked everyone involved in helping make the tournament a success.
“I would like to thank our parent volunteers for showing up early, staying late and donating their time to help us in concessions, registration, T-shirts, field duties and running for supplies. Without all of them, this tournament could not be successful. Thanks to our coaches and players for their hard work on and off the field supporting our booster club and CHS soccer. I would also like to thank my fellow booster officers who have joined me in this adventure. Your hard work and dedication to the club is immeasurable. Whenever something needs done, someone volunteers and finishes the job. Thank you so much Bob, Jan, Carie, Linda and Pat,”
