POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Girard, Liberty and Hubbard:

GIRARD

July 28

Harassment: A Squaw Creek Drive woman said a man has made such calls to her, causing the accuser to fear for her safety.

July 29

Domestic violence: Jarel L. Smith of Patricia Drive, Girard, was charged with the crime after a woman told police Smith had grabbed her arm and violently swung her around, nearly causing her to fall on concrete, and produced a firearm.

July 30

Arrest: While responding to a report of an unwanted person at a Church Hill Road residence, police picked up Ronald G. Madden of Church Hill, Girard. He is accused of failing to appear in court to face a criminal-trespassing charge.

July 31

Assault: A woman told police she had been slapped on the face and neck during an argument in the 400 block of Dearborn Avenue.

Recovered property: A dirt bike that had been reported stolen in the 900 block of Beechwood Avenue was found near Church Hill and Shannon roads.

Drugs: The landlord cleaning a home in the 900 block of North Highland Avenue reported having found a bag of suspected marijuana, two suspected marijuana pipes and other contraband.

Aug. 1

Arrest: A traffic stop on U.S. Route 422 resulted in the arrest of 49-year-old John E. Howard of Alliance, who was wanted on a Columbiana County warrant charging domestic violence.

Burglary: While on routine patrol in the 1200 block of South State Street, an officer noticed the front door to a vacant home was open. The door frame had been damaged as well.

Arrest: Kelly R. Riley, 34, was taken into custody near Prospect Street. Riley, of Church Hill Road, Girard, was wanted on a warrant charging failure to appear in court on a disorderly-conduct charge.

Menacing: A Trumbull Avenue man said his former wife has called threatening to kill the accuser and have others beat him up.

Theft: A Tod Lane man discovered two bicycles and a basketball missing from his residence.

Theft/vandalism: A $5,000 excavator and other equipment was damaged at a bridge on Anderson-Morris Road. Also, 350 gallons of diesel fuel had been stolen.

Arrest: Cornelius Booth, 30, of Youngstown, was taken into custody during a traffic stop near Elruth Court. Booth was wanted on a Mahoning County warrant accusing him of failing to pay court-ordered child support.

LIBERTY

July 27

Arrest: Terrance L. Croom of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Youngstown, was taken into custody after police stopped his vehicle near Logan Way. Croom, 25, was wanted on a township warrant accusing him of failing to appear in court.

Arrest: Authorities took custody of 33-year-old James M. Bailey of Brownlee Avenue, Youngstown, who was wanted on a Liberty warrant charging him with failure to appear in court on a theft count.

Drugs: After being pulled over near Gypsy Lane, 21-year-old John J. Gifford of Elm Street, Struthers, was charged with one felony count each of possession of criminal tools, trafficking in marijuana and cocaine possession, along with one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Two large mason jars filled with packaged and loose marijuana, a pill bottle with suspected marijuana, a device commonly used to grind marijuana, papers often used to roll the drug and two digital scales were found, authorities alleged.

July 28

Assault/aggravated menacing: Police responded to a call about a man possibly chasing a woman with a knife before charging 24-year-old Jermaine Donlow of Illinois Avenue, Youngstown, with one misdemeanor count each of assault and aggravated menacing. A Youngstown woman alleged he had a knife and twice threatened to kill her; also, the accuser’s son alleged Donlow had struck him in the face.

Criminal trespassing: Jonnie M. Winslow, 28, of Hadley Avenue, was charged with criminal trespassing after police said he had violated a warning to stay off property belonging to a Speedway gas station, 4210 Belmont Ave.

Theft: A Roosevelt Drive man found out someone without permission had removed about $522 from his prepaid credit-card account.

Identity theft: A Craig Lane man learned that his debit card had been used fraudulently at Walgreen’s Pharmacy locations in Cleveland and Columbus, though the transactions were declined.

Vandalism: Someone set fire to two trash cans at Church Hill Park off Belmont Avenue, one of which melted and damaged a portion of nearby asphalt.

Theft: A property manager overseeing a Monticello Boulevard apartment complex reported the theft of various personnel files and documents.

Theft: William A. Harris, 41, of Spruce Trail, Warren, was charged with theft and identity theft after a $34 bottle of air-conditioner refill material was stolen from Walmart, 200 Goldie Road. In addition, a man alleged Harris has been illegally using his identity for the past 10 years.

July 29

Arrest: Lawrence K. Dunmire III, 20, of Trumbull Avenue, Girard, surrendered on a Weathersfield Township warrant charging domestic violence.

Identity theft: A Youngstown man at a Belmont Avenue credit union reported being informed that someone had made three unauthorized charges with his debit card that totaled roughly $265.

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into E-Z Self Storage, 1335 Trumbull Ave., then damaged a lock and hasp to a storage unit.

Drugs: Saule J. Groover, 42, of Mohawk Drive, Girard, was charged with operating a vehicle impaired as well as possession of crack cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia after having been pulled over near Gypsy Lane. Found were a large rock of suspected crack cocaine, a small bag of suspected marijuana and a pipe with burn marks typical in drug use, a report showed.

Drug paraphernalia: A traffic stop on Belmont Avenue led to charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and obstructing official business against 35-year-old Crystal D. Hotlosz of St. Clairsville, Ohio. Hotlosz, who also was wanted on two Youngstown warrants and had provided a false Social Security number and age, had a straw with suspected drug residue, a report said.

July 30

Aggravated menacing: A Trumbull Court man alleged an acquaintance with whom he’s embroiled in a property dispute sent text messages containing threats to kill the accuser and send others to harm him.

Criminal mischief: A vehicle in the 500 block of Aurora Drive was found with several scratches to its rear hatch.

Burglary/criminal damage: Someone broke into an apartment in the 2900 block of Northview Boulevard via a window and damaged a $100 cellphone.

Aggravated menacing: Authorities answered a call pertaining to someone possibly with a gun at a Church Hill Road residence, where an Overbrook Avenue man alleged the other person had pointed a handgun at and threatened to kill him. The argument apparently related to $30 the gunman said the accuser owes him for an amplifier.

Aug. 1

Arrest: Authorities were dispatched to the Mahoning County jail to arrest Morgan L. Walker of Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Liberty. The 38-year-old Walker was wanted on a township warrant charging failure to appear in court.

Aug. 2

Arrest: The Ohio State Highway Patrol handed 52-year-old Davean E. Anderson to Liberty police. Anderson, of Benfold Lane, Youngstown, was wanted on an outstanding Girard Municipal Court warrant.

HUBBARD

July 27

Vehicle theft: A $1,200, four-wheel vehicle was stolen in the 200 block of Myron Street.

Drugs: While answering a call regarding a possible heroin overdose at a Stewart Avenue home, officers charged 31-year-old Bruce J. Graban of Stewart, Hubbard, with possession of drug-abuse instruments when, they alleged, a needle was in the vicinity.

Theft/identity fraud: A Stewart Avenue woman told police a man called three times claiming she had computer problems and tricked the accuser into allowing him access to her computer and bank information regarding a supposed refund before she discovered $201 had been withdrawn from her account, leaving a negative balance.

Theft/forgery: A 37-year-old Columbus man who claimed to be a store manager reportedly entered Family Dollar, 437 E. Liberty St., then passed a $100 travelers check later found to be counterfeit. The man, who has a lengthy criminal record, committed similar crimes at several other area locations, a report said.

July 28

Arrest: Canfield police relinquished custody of Robert J. Holeman, 57, to township authorities. Holeman, of Campground Road, West Middlesex, Pa., was wanted on a charge of failing to comply with a court order.

July 29

Arrest: Police picked up 54-year-old Harold D. Lowe as he walked on West Liberty Street. Lowe, of Borden Street, Youngstown, was wanted on a warrant.

Aug. 1

Attempted burglary: Someone apparently tried to enter a residence in the 100 block of North Main Street before the homeowner saw the would-be burglar running from the front porch.
